Charities

w.sLots of organizations have formed to help get New Orleans back on its feet: here are some of the best:

Backbeat Foundation -- The Backbeat Foundation is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt Louisiana non-profit corporation whose mission is to foster support of the rich New Orleans cultural heritage by providing assistance to local musical performers through both programming and resource assistance.

Backstreet Cultural Museum -- The Backstreet Cultural Museum is filled with exhibits reflecting aspects of the unique cultural traditions and institutions of African-American culture in New Orleans – Mardi Gras Indians, Jazz Funerals and Social Aid & Pleasure Clubs.

Habitat for Humanity New Orleans Musicians Village -- Musicians’ Village, a cornerstone of the New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity (NOAHH) post-Katrina rebuilding effort, is designed to both construct a community and preserve a culture. Conceived by New Orleans natives Harry Connick, Jr. and Branford Marsalis, Musicians’ Village will provide a home for both the artists who have defined the city’s culture and the sounds that have shaped the musical vernacular of the world.

Levees.org -- publicizes the need to repair and rebuild New Orleans levee protection system to adequately protect against future hurricanes.

Music Rising -- Music Rising was created in November of 2005 by U2's The Edge, Bob Ezrin and Henry Juszkiewicz. Music Rising was able to provide replacement instruments to nearly 2,500 professional musicians from the Central Gulf region. Music Rising is now helping churches and schools who were affected by hurricanes to rebuild their music programs by replacing instruments that they lost in the devastation.

New Orleans Musicians Clinic -- Since 1998, NOMC has played a pivotal role in sustaining the health of New Orleans musicians. As housing, family and financial challenges continue, we strive to remain a core resource for the music community. From providing medical serivces to funding gigs, our response to the needs of musicians knows no boundaries. Please support us in our efforts - we've got our finger 'on the pulse' of the New Orleans music community.

New Orleans Musicians Relief Fund -- a 501(c)(3) charity, founded by displaced New Orleans musicians to help provide support for the New Orleans music community.

Renew Our Music -- The mission of the Renew Our Music Funds is to revive New Orleans’ cultural traditions by providing assistance to the individuals and institutions that will carry them forward.

Sweet Home New Orleans -- a non-profit organization dedicated to revitalizing the music and cultural community within the neighborhoods of New Orleans by helping our tradition bearers return to and stay at home. Formerly the New Orleans Musicians Hurricane Relief Fund. Also, check out their t-shirts and hats and bumper stickers!

Tipitina's Foundation -- Provides instruments to New Orleans public schools; runs an internship programs to teach musicians all aspects of the music industry; a co-op to develop business and job skills training for musicians and other artists; and Sunday music workshops where students can play with and learn from the best musicians in the city -- for free.
